Navajo sand paintings depict different aspects of Navajo mythology. One of the stories Medicine Men tell in their sand paintings is the story of Father Sky & Mother Earth. This story represents the close relationship between the Navajo people and the universe. The earth is literally their Mother while the sky is their Father. The sky gives light and precipitation to the earth for all living things. All things are owed to the Earth & Sky.

The colors of the Earth and Sky Collection are the colors of the universe. Where the Earth & Sky meet is the horizon. Turquoise represents the Color of the Sky in daylight, while Black Jade represents the color of the night sky. Pink, white and red are the colors that are formed when the Earth meets the Sky, and the blending of these colors that makes our horizon. It is this meeting of Earth & Sky that is reflected in the collection.
